Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN application by Jones Transport Services (Liverpool), Ltd., brought 115 objectors when heard at Liverpool last week. An open A licence for 30

vehicles of 139 tons was sought, these including 14 rigid and 16 articulated units. The vehicles were on contract to the British Aluminium Co., Ltd., but the firm were stated to be willing that this should be surrendered if the A licence were granted. It was proposed, however, that six of the tractors should be replaced by heavier units.

Mr. J. Booth, for the applicants, said that the normal user required was: "mainly goods for the British Aluminium Co., Ltd., as required." The vehicles had been on contract since 1956, and before this Jones Transport had operated units on C hire with the Alumina Co., Ltd., a subiichary of the British Aluminium Co.

The latter were now trying to reduce their haulage costs and had decided that this could only be done by converting their contract units into a public A licence.

In addition to being of benefit to the British Aluminium Co., the other customers of Jones would obtain a better service if the application were granted.

Giving evidence. Mr. W. F. Jones, managing director of the applicant company, said that there was no intention of entering new markets. Their first duty was to the British Aluminium Co. In addition to those coming from their factories, return loads would also be brought from London. Scotland and the north-east coast.

The hearing was adjourned.

New ARTCO Chairman

mR. A. CUSICK was elected chairman of Associated Road Transport Contractors last week when Mr. M. W. Harris asked a meeting of the board to relieve him of the chairmanship on health grounds. Mr. Harris indicated his willingness to continue as a director.

Three committees were formed at the board's meeting in London to study bulk purchasing, finance and advertising and operational activities. Each committee will meet separately and report back to the board on December 6.
