FINLAND-BASED shortsea door-to-door operator Containerships Group has rubbished suggestions that it is about to be taken over by Russian liner operator FESCO.

In an increasingly bitter quarrel, the Finnish company — which is 65% owned by an Iceland-listed firm, Eimskip— has reacted angrily to a statement by FESCO that it wants to buy Containerships.

Containerships managing

director Sigurjon Markusson says: "We have seen statements from FESCO in the Russian press to the effect that it intends to buy Containerships Group. I would like to emphasise that neither Containerships Group nor Eimskip has had any discussions with FESCO and we have no intention of having any discussions with them.'

Markusson says that Containerships' main gateway into Russia, the Moby Dick terminal in St Petersburg, had recently been subject to "apparent harassment". He claims that access roads to the terminal have been "illegally closed", adding that Containerships "is working hard with the Russian authorities to ensure that our legal rights to operate are not interfered with, and that cargo entrusted to Containerships Group will continue to flow freely across our network".
