• Transport minister Michael Portillo predicts that the Channel Tunnel will boost M20 traffic by 6,000 vehicles a day by the year 2008.
"We are confident that this level can be absorbed by the road system in Kent and.elsewhere with the road improvements we already have planned or in progress." claims Portillo.
Portillo, the only Transport Minister to stay at the Department of Transport after the last Government reshuffle, is expected to become the new community charge minister to oversea the forthcoming poll tax review.
