• Seat launches a dieselengined version of its Terra van this week, and CM has already had a test drive.
As expected (CM 15-21 February), the engine is a 1,272cc Volkswagen developing 34kW (45hp) driving through a five-speed gearbox; this
driveline is new to the UK, but is featured in some continental VW Polos.
The Terra is the first Seat to be fitted with a VW diesel; the engines are shipped to Spain in kit form for assembly and installation at Seat's Barcelona plant. Even with a diesel engine premium of £522, the Terra sells at £4,652 (exVAT), making it the cheapest diesel van in its class. It offers a payload of 520kg. Seat marketing director Adrian Palmer reckons that diesels could account for 80% of the hopedfor 2,000 Terra sales this year.
Out on the road the diesel Terra is acceptably quiet, thanks to the additional sound insulation on all 1990 Terras, with respectable performance and a light but precise gearchange. Standard of finish is good.
Other innovations for all Terra vans include servoassisted brakes, a re-sited spare wheel below the cargo area and a redesigned radiator and front bumper. Otherwise the Terra is similar to the petrol-engined model that we tested last year (CM 6-12 April 1989).
LJ All new Seats now come with 'Seat Secure' cover, which includes a year's free AA membership. It is backed up by 'Secure New and Used' extended warranty scheme.
