• South Yorkshire Transport has reorganised its engineering services into five new units, each functioning as an independent cost centre with a target saving of at least 15%.
The five units, backed up by a central computer, will handle fleet maintenance, cleaning, property, supplies and central services — each under its own manager covering all the company's garages.
The new structure replaces a garage-based operation where all engineering services were managed together.
It was felt by the SYT management that some aspects, like cleaning, were not being performed properly, as pressure to keep the fleet on the road always took priority.
