Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Easylift Systems of Basingstoke, Hants, has ceased trading after 12 years in the recovery equipment business. Managing director Douglas Maltby, who set up the company, has blamed bad financial advice, "back-biting" among manufacturers and high interest rates for the failure.

The company's future hangs in the balance while the accounts are examined. A decision is due in the next week or so as to whether it will be sold as a going concern or put into voluntary liquidation.

Maltby, who describes himself as a lorry driver made good, says someone with capit al could take over. "I was instrumental in introducing the Easylift frame into this country, and have sold about 2,000.

"Now a lot of people have made cheap copies and there is tremendous competition. All the manufacturers are fighting between themselves battling for contracts by undermining each other on price. They are not doing the industry or their customers any good. There will be no money to put into developing new products."

Maltby is now looking for a position in the industry, but is still available to give any advice on spares for Easylift equipment on (0734) 883440.
