• A nationwide temporary HGV driver agency will be launched by BRS within the next 18 months.
Steve Abel, recently appointed BRS group managing director, says this is just one of the new services being drawn up by the NFC firm. "We believe there is a lot of potential of synergy between people renting a truck and wanting a driver," he says.
The driver agency would be introduced under the umbrella , of BRS Rental which is headed by Phil Chapman — one of the seven new board appointments at BRS. Martin Mldred has been promoted to contract hire director and Phil Biddlecombe has been named engineering director; all are new posts.
Victor Ross is the new personnel director; Ray Gudge becomes finance director; Andrew Callaghan is Midlands managing director and Jim Painter is northern managing director. "This is the strongest management team I have ever seen," says Abel.
BRS plans also include expanding outside the UK. "We have been looking at America and Europe. They are our two priorities; BRS will become a world-wide brand," says Abel.
He adds that the company is also looking for new markets for its rental and contract hire divisions. Contract hire business is booming, despite high interest rates, and Abel says the division is already ahead of its 1990 budget plan. However, vehicle rental is still slow and BRS has been forced to cut its vehicle fleet by 17% to 2,700 vehicles over the past 15 months.
BRS has won a major contract with Hoover which will be run with sister firm Exel Logistics. A new distribution site is being sought in Wales for the contract.
