Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Exhaust specialist Unikat based in Malmo, Sweden, which helped Volvo produce exhaust soot filters for trucks and buses, has developed a universal Combi-Filter system suitable for all types of vehicles up to 360kW (483hp).

Unikat has several versions in service with the Swedish Post Office on Scania and Ford Cargo chassis and a large number are also in use with city refuse collection trucks.

The Combi-Filter uses the same principles as the Volvo filter, cleaning soot particles, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons from the diesel exhaust gases, at the same time acting as a silencer.

In order to prevent a buildup of back pressure, the filter burns clean at high exhaust gas temperature (over 450°C) or by mains electric heating during work breaks.

At around £4,000 it is available in the UK through Unikat's agent Western Tydens of Ivybridge, Devon.

Unikat also makes a cheaper (g1,000) standard catalytic exhaust cleaner, a version of which has been fitted to a Leyland Daf Roadrunner 8.13 (Daf 800) rigid being evaluated by the Swedish Post Office, Western Tydens is currently discussing equipping vehicles from a large UK rental firm, due to be contracted out to a health food distribution company.

Early particulate systems are believed to have suffered from a relatively short service life but, says Unikat, its new Combi-Filter is expected to last the life of a truck.
