• The Institute of the Motor Industry is urging employers and teaching organisations to adopt its Certificate and Licentiate Automotive Engineers qualifications in an effort to increase the number of fully-trained fitters.
The 'MI reckons that problems arise when fitters reach the end of their second year of training. In the first two years many fitters are on YTS schemes so their training costs very little. After that the costs of completing the Road Transport Industry Training Board's training modules to earn final certification are prohibitive to some employers.
In some areas as few as 17% of trainees are able to carry on through to final certification.
Under the 1M1 scheme dayrelease leading to City and Guilds 383 or 381 (or equivalent) is still undertaken, but final certification is by confirmation of competence in industry — not by completion of RT1TB modules. So far 16 vehicle manufacturers have agreed to support this training initiative.
