• A year after announcing its imminent arrival in the UK, Seddon Atkinson has finally 'officially' launched the righthand-drive Ironer TX tractive unit which is built in Spain by its parent company, Pegaso.
The two-axle 1236.38 Ironer TX artic has the same highroof premium sleeper cab as the Seddon Atkinson Stratocruiser; both are produced at the jointly owned Daf/Pegaso Cabtec plant next to the main Pegaso heavy truck assembly line in Madrid.
For the moment the righthand-drive Troner TX will be restricted to a 3.5m wheelbase model with a standard specification of: 265kW (360hp) 11.9-litre Pegaso engine; 16speed ZF Ecosplit synchromesh gearbox (built under licence in Spain by Pegaso); and Pegaso single-reduction hypoid back axle.
The charge-cooled Pegaso engine features an unusual four-valves-per-cylinder design and has a peak torque of 1,524Nm (1,1231bft) at 1,200rpm. Although maximum power from the straight six engine is currently restricted to 265kW, a 298kW (400hp) version is expected to break cover early next year.
Seddon Atkinson is aiming the Troner TX at those "highly specced international or long distance haulage fleets" which are currently buying imported tractor models from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Scania and
Volvo. In line with its premium specification tag, the Troner comes with air suspension on the drive axle, air conditioning, heated driver's seat and air suspended passenger seat, night heater, fog lights and a full aerodynamic air deflector package as standard. But as yet an anti-lock braking system is not available. A 3.8m model could be offered if there is enough demand.
Kerbweight for the Troner TX is quoted at 7,100kg (excluding fuel and driver), and the list price is £57,842.
Seddon Atkinson hopes to sell 90 right-hand-drive Troner TXs this year, which it says will equate to some 6% of the premium tractor market between 261-298kW (350-400hp). Despite the potential for a clash with its own Strato range, Seddon insists that the Troner will bring it incremental sales, not least as those operators who would consider buying a Troner would be unlikely to opt for a Strata But many tractor buyers want more power than the Troner's 265kW; they could be satisfied by the Strato 17.40C with the 298kW (400hp) 14litre Cummins engine.
All 42 Seddon dealers will stock parts for the Troner, with each having a service, parts and salesmen "dedicated" to the Ironer. According to Seddon Atkinson's managing director Michael Vargas, each dealer will hold a specific parts list approved by Pegaso.
