• Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley is prepared to rethink the vehicle registration change-over date in 1987.

Last month the Government said it would be changed from August 1 to October 1 to help the motor industry, which has protested about the difficulty of coping with the current peak of new sales in August This week Ridley told MPs that following representations from the Motor Agents Association he is now prepared to consider introducing the E prefix on July 1.

Ile will only consider the alternative if it has the support of the vast majority of the industry and the police.
