Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

indivisible loads can be carried with Construction and Use Regulations. However, 1 am informed by the local office of the Department of the Environment that I cannot carry two indivisible loads in this way. Could you clarify pkase?

A Regulation 20(p) of the Motor Vehicle (Authorisation of Special Types) General Order 1973 reads: "No vehicle or combination of vehicles shall carry more than one abnormal indivisible load at any one time: provided that — subject to compliance with all the requirements of the Construction and Use Regulations with respect to the laden weight of vehicles and the weights transmitted to the road surface by all or any of the vehicles — it shall be permissible for a vehicle or any vehicles comprised in a combination of vehicles to carry more than one abnormal indivisible load of the same character and, where any abnormal indivisible load is carried, to carry articles of similar character."

It will be seen, therefore that if a vehicle comes within the weight limits laid down by the C and U Regulations then two "loads of the same character may be carried. If the vehicles do not come within the C and U requirements then two indivisible loads may still be carried provided that the special requirements as set out in April 5 "Know the law' artiele are complied with. This is provided for in the next paragraph of the Regulation 20(p) referred to before.
