Last week The Times ran an advertisement for British Rail which compared fuel consumption. A train carrying 250 passengers from London to Newcastle used 400 gallons, it said; to achieve the same objective by car required 1,750ga1 and by plane 2000. This Monday's edition had a letter from Freddie Wood, National Bus Company chairman, which concluded: "Your readers may like to know that six of our long-distance coaches will do the same job and use about 150 gallons."
