R. (Bob) Beckham, 52,-has been elected president of the Freight Transport Association. Mr Beckham is distribution director of RHM Foods Ltd, and succeeds L. A. Castleton, chief transport officer of the Metal Box Co Ltd. Mr Beckham has spent most of his life in distribution or associated activities and his experience includes depot management, divisional and head office management for SPD Ltd, the Unilever owned distribution organization, and with the grocery division of RHM Ltd.

The Duke of Kent has accepted an invitation to become president of the Automobile Association in succession to the Duke of Norfolk who is retiring on June 30 after 13 years as president.

Richard A. Durran, 41, has been appointed by Southern SRS Ltd as branch manager at Bedfont, near Ashford — the branch which handles the storage and distribution of Mars Ltd. Mr Durran was 15 years with Unilever Ltd, becoming transport operations manager, and moves to Bedfont from the Southern BRS branch in Long Lane, Southwark. T. M. Glass, 45, has a new post with the National Bus Company — group liaison officer, public relations.

R. M. Connell has been appointed manager (designate) Sheffield branch, BRS Parcels Ltd. J. Bailey, the present manager, will retire shortly. Mr Connell was previously manager at Earlston.

Malcolm Howitt, training officer with City of Cardiff Transport, later this month becomes Lancaster City Council transport department traffic superintendent.

S. A. Blackbourn (Granville Tours Ltd, Grimsby) has been elected Chairman of the East Midland area of the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association. He succeeds F. L. Lees. D. R. Johnson succeeds J. P. Trease as secretary.

William Jones, North Cambrian division manager of Crosville Motor Services Ltd, has retired after nearly 50 years service with the company. His successor will be G. Penketh, divisional manager at Rhyl and Llandudno depot.

William W. Williams, traffic manager of Brighton, Hove and District Omnibus Co Ltd, has retired after 50 years in the industry.

T. J. H. Edwards (area training manager (SW), RTITB) has been elected chairman of the South Wales and Monmouthshire section of the Chartered Institute of Transport; John Vickers (transport engineer, Royal Insurance. Group) is secretary and vice-chairman; W. F. Cooper (traffic manager, Western Welsh Omnibus Co) is vice-chairman; and W. J. Passey (assistant terminal manager, SR (WR)) is treasurer.

S.S. Dunlop (Dunlops Transport, Kilsyth) has been elected chairman of the Road Haulage Association Scottish area; A. Wilson (John Wilson & Son (Coyleton) Ltd) and A. F. McLellan (A. J. McKellan Ltd, Glasgow) are vice-chairmen.

G. J. Parsons has been appointed to the board of directors of Wilfred Overton Ltd, a subsidiary of Plaxtons (Scarborough) Ltd. Mr Parsons is manager at the intown works.

Anthony F. Smith, chairman of the Waste Clearance (Holdings) Ltd Group in Warrington, has been elected chairman of the National Association of Waste Disposal Contractors.
