FOLLOWING a week-long experiment in January, London's Hammersmith flyover is to be closed to traffic at night permanently. An average of 5,250 vehicles were diverted nightly along ground-level routes during the experiment. Sound recordings showed that noise levels were halved for families living near the flyover while the noise increase was "scarcely perceptible" along the diversionary route of Bridge View Road and Hammersmith Road.
