DEEP-SEA container traffic doubled during 1973 at Southampton. Container traffic rose from 821,000 tonnes in 1972 to 1,684,000tonnes in 1973, Ro-ro traffic also increased significantly, from 762,000 tonnes in 65,000 units in 1972 to 1,093,000 tonnes in 135,000 units in 1973. One freight vehicle was rolled on or off the ferries in Southampton every 4.75 minutes.
