A SEMI-TRAILER van for the use of .C1 geological field parties-on desert assignments, made by Autodrome (Engineers),
Ltd., is believed to be the largest of its
type ever produced in Britain. The overall length is 48 ft. 6 in., the width 10 ft., and
the height is 13 ft. 8 in. measured over the load-carrying platform on the roof. The weight is approximately 15 tons. Together with two smaller two-wheeled units, destined to he dining and receational cars, the giant semi-trailer left the maker's works at Audenshaw, Manchester, last week-end. They have been purchased byAramco Overseas C'o., Ltd.. for use in Saudi Arabia.
The chassis frame is of welded construction. An outer framework is attached to
the main load-carrying beams by deep, tapered outriggers. The frame is gussetcd and stiffened at points of high load concen tration. An adaptor and dolly have been made to match this machine, so that it can be used as a separate trailer when required.
A tandem-axle walking-beam bogie is fitted with cam-operated brakes 15 in. in diameter and 61 in. wide, and single 18-in. by 24-in, low-pressure sand tyres.
Riveted light-metal sections are employed for the body fram ing, the pillars and roof sticks forming continuous hoops. A sun platform or load-carrying deck 38 ft. long is mounted on the roof arid is stressed to deal, with a distributed weight of approximately 2 tons.
Aluminium-alloy body panels are used both inside and outside, the outside being swaged up to the waist line. There is no direct metallic contact between inner and outer skins, which arc separated by 31, in. of Fibreglass insulating material. A° thick rubber strip is sandwiched between the body-shell bottom rail and the chassis frame.
Marine plywood is employed for the floor, which is independent of the body shell, and there is further Fibreglass insulation between floor and sub-floor. The floor is bolted direct to the frame, without use of body bearers.
There are two hinged outer doors on the left, behind each being sliding-mesh screens. Double glass windows, tinted on the outside, are provided. A 40-kW. AC.
power supply comes from a separate generating trailer.
In the front compartment are two airconditioning units that feed the remaining four rooms with fresh air by means of built-in ducts. Desks, tables, cabinets and other office fittings are rigidly attached to the floor. Swing doors are fitted between the offices.
The two-wheeled trailers have bodies 28 ft. long, 11 ft. wide, and 12 ft. 4 in. high. As there are no brakes on these units, air hoses are provided for connecting the pressure brakes of a following vehicle with the prime mover, the dining trailer sandwiched between the two forming a train.
The saloon is fitted out with a full-length folding table; 16 dining chairs, a magazine rack and a radio set. A self-contained airconditioning unit is installed..
