COMPLETION of Langley estate.
Middleton, housing 18,000 of Man chester's overspill population, justified an increase in basic vehicle allowance to five on any day, plus increases totalling 124 at peak holiday periods. This was submitted by Mr. H. Backhouse, for Johnston Bros. (Middleton), Ltd., to the North Western Traffic Cornmissioners last week when the company sought to renew their excursion licences from Middleton and Castleton with modifications.
North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., Lancashire United Transport, Ltd., Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., W. C. Standerwick, Ltd., Creams (Lancashire), Ltd., Happiway Tours, Ltd., Yelloway Motor Services, Ltd., Manchester Corporation and the railways objected.
Mr. Backhouse said that there had been little alteration to his clients' licences since 1930. When they came up for renewal in 1954, modifications were sought, but the figures revealed extensive illegal activities. The Commissioners put the concern "on probation" for three years. The company now sought to extend and inerease their services, and to add three new pickingup points in Middleton and Langley.
Mr. F. D. Walker, for some of the objectors, said that Creams had an equal claim to additional traffic. Ribble had express services leaving Middleton to Blackpool, Cleveleys and Morecambe, and were applying to pick tip at Langley.
It was contended for Manchester Corporation that there were frequent bus services from Middleton connecting with express services of the North Western company to North Wales and other parts.
Mr. G. H. P. Bearnes, for the railways, said that the applicants were asking to carry more than 2,000 extra passengers during Middleton holiday fortnight. This would cause serious abstraction. Mr. J. W. Dooley, traffic manager of the applicants, said that as local operators they had a right to monopolize excursions from Langley.
The hearing as adjourned
