7"fIE annual meeting of the North amptonshire sub-area of the Road Haulage Association was heldat Northampton last Friday, when Mr. B. J. Bagshaw, of Kettering, was reappointed chairman. Mr. E. 0. Gray, hon. secretary of the East Midland Area, with Mr. R. S. Anderson, divisional organizer, was a notable visitor.
Other appointments were:—Vicechairman, Mr. H. J. Harrison, Wellingborough; hon. secretary, Mr. W. G. Eales, Wellingborough; committee, Messrs. A. Valentine, 0. Goodey, M. Garner, J. S. Owen, J. T. Timms, S. T. Challis, W. Franklin, A. Chappell, A. E. Craddock, R. Paragreen, Lack Bros., H. Dunnitt, and D. Dyson; representatives to Northampton and County Chamber of Commerce, Messrs. Harrison and Timms; delegates to the East Midland Area Committee, Messrs. Bagshaw and Harrison.
Mr. Gray, speaking on the interim report of the East Midland Area Joint Conciliation Board and on enforcement committees, gave a striking illustration of the working of these committees.
"In Derby," he said, "there was a complaint of a contractor, who was engaged by the corporation, not paying the correct scale of wages. He was invited to attend before the local enforcement committee. He attended and could not substantiate his statement that he was paying the correct rate of wages. In consequence, a re-port was made by the committee fi-i• Derby Corporation; which crossed that man off its list of contractors."
