Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

When are we exempt from keeping to drivers’ hours?

We have an operating centre on one of the Scottish islands with six lorries over 3.5 tonnes. Its area is less than 2,300m2. Do we need the drivers to record their hours on the tachographs?

No. There is a derogation in drivers’ hours rule 561/2006. They may even be exempt from keeping records altogether, if they drive for less than four hours a day within a radius of 50km (31 miles).

But beware! If any of the drivers leave the island and drive on the mainland for a day, they are no longer exempt and will have to keep records or their work for the week in question and take appropriate weekly rest at the end of the week and comply with the EU weekly driving limit.
