• Is this a prototype of the 14 Volkswagen Transporter replacement? The picture, along with several others, has recently been published in German magazines as the new Transporter. It is reported that the vehicle will be launched in mid-1989, and will be sold alongside the existing Transporter, and the LT series vehicles. It will have front-wheeldrive, and petrol and diesel options. A new diesel engine is also being developed.
Volkswagen's spokesman in Germany says that the drawing is just "an artist's impression, helping us with his idea of what the vehicle should look like". There are new models being planned, he tells us, but "for the 1990s only".
Volkswagen has had "a short phase of thinking about" a 2. 8 litre version of its six-cylinder 2.4-litre IDI diesel engine. It will, however, "stay with 2.4 litres, and work will continue on combustion chamber development", says the company.
