Valuable Weight saving in New Design of Edbro 5-ton Tipping Gear
BY means of a logical modification of the existing Edbro telescopic-ram, hydraulic tipping gear for 5-ton loads, a saving of 70 lb. has been effected, without in any way affecting the strength and reliability of the working mechanism. Actually, the front telescopic ram and the swash-plate fourcylindered pump are unchanged.
Although designed primarily for fitting to the Commer L.N.5 or the Dodge F.S.F. chassis, the new gear is suitable for any typical 5-ton chassis and is sufficiently light to enable most vehicles of similar specification to he supplied as tippers within the " under 50-cwt." category. The gear, complete, when fitted, weighs, less oil, 2 cwt. 5 lb.
Weight reduction and the simplicity of erection are achieved by incorporating the oil tank in a unit with the base of the ram, the tank itself forming the pivoted trunnion about which the ram swings. Bearings are clipped to the chassis frame to carry short shafts integral with the ends of the tank, the latter being of rectangular section, built up of steel plate. Resting on a reinforced portion of the bottom of the box is a steel forging, into which the lower section of the
telescopic ram is brazed. This ram base embodies the manually operated release valve, the overload valve, and a check valve to prevent the body falling should any part of the pressure system become broken or damaged. The whole of the pressure-carrying mechanism is thus in a unit, and the only connection is the delivery line from the pump to one of the end shafts of the trunnion box. No part of the oil reservoir is subject to pressure. The only other external pipe is the suction pipe between tank and pump.
Practically no encroachment upon body space results from this design. The combined tank and trunnion member rests across the chassis frame under the body, and the vertical ram can be accommodated in a U-section recess in the headboard, which is thus brought as close to the cab as possible. Erection is exceedingly simple, as there is no separate oil tank, the control is self-contained, and, apart from the two pipes, there are no external connections or separate components.
Giving a lift of 7 ft., the gear will, at engine idling speed, complete the tip in 35 secs., whilst the body can be lowered in 7-secs. The price has. been fixed, provisionally, at £48.
In ,addition to the smaller gears in which it has specialized, Edwards Bros. (Tippers), Ltd., Bradford Street, BaltOn, has also introduced heavy model end-tipping gears for 8-ton and 12-ton vehicles, with twin underbody telescopic rams. The 8-ton gear has a six-cylindered swath-plate pump, and costs £116; the 12-tanner is operated by a pair of standard four-cylindered pumps. The price is £145. The address of the concern's London depot is Telford Way, East Acton, W.S.
