THE NUMBER OF vehicles travelling to the Continent in the first quarter of 2004 rose 1%, but UK-registered vehicles making the journey fell yet again, according to the Department for Transport. UK vehicles carried six
million tonnes out of the UK:a fall of 2% compared with 2002. Goods moved into and out of the country by UK-registered vehicles fell by 3% and 2% respectively between 2002 and 2003; 464,600 vehicles travelled to the
Continent. This was a 3% increase from the previous quarter and an increase of 1% from the first quarter of 2003. UK-registered vehicles accounted for 26% of all powered vehicles, compared with 28% a year ago.
