Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Cohn Barnett The latest chapter in the story Of the Ford/Mazda pickup building partnership is now complete, following the launch of Mazda's version. Although the new model is known as the "Fighter" in many markets, Mazda, perhaps wisely, has opted to keep the 82500 designation for the (1K.

Individual style

Sharing the same basic running gear and internal body structure as the Ford Ranger means that comparisons are inevitable, but the two model ranges have sufficiently different styling to possess their own individual ity. The B-Series styling includes a predominantly black grille, with chrome surround on the Double Cab models, shallower headlamps and white indicator lenses, which combine with attractively flared wheelarches to create a less "butch" appearance than the Ford.

Mazda's versions span a greater breadth than Ford's, going from a lower specified and priced entry level model to a comprehensively equipped lifestyle" model.

Four B2500s are available, starting with the Single Cab in either two or four-wheel-drive form with a 76hp, 2.5-litre normally aspirated engine. The other pair, the 4x4 Double Cab and the 4Action leisure vehicle, are powered by the charge-cooled turbo-diesel, producing 107hp.

The most significant difference from Ford's line-up is the omission of an extended cab version. Prices have been pitched very aggressively, starting at less than £10,000 ex-VAT.

The Single Cab models have a limited equipment list, missing such things as electric windows and mirrors, and a passenger airbag, but they are far from spartan. Comfort is still catered for by a specification which includes cloth-trimmed bucket seats, power steering and an excellent Sony ADS radio/cassette, while safety features include seat-belt pre-tensioners and anti-submarining seats.

The Double Cab features has all the items mentioned above as missing, as well as a heated rear window, central locking and velour upholstery. Topping the range, but unlikely to feature on many fleet buyers' shortlists, is the 4Action.

Top spec Based on the 4x4 Double Cab, the 4Action incorporates a range of lifestyle necessities. including alloy wheels, air-conditioning and a 10 CD sound system. It is an unashamed response to tne Mitsubishi 4Life. The basic warranty is for three years or 60,000 miles, with roadside assistance, but Mazda's "Free Options Menu" initiative, which offers a choice from a range of incentives, continues until 30 September.

B-Series buyers can choose from a five-year, unlimitedmileage warranty, an extra £500 discount, 3.3% finance, or accessories to the value of £1,000 (including VAT).

Mazda has now created a dedicated light commercial vehicle division which has been briefed to raise awareness of the brand and significantly increase market share.
