Wilson Double-Deck grew out of the family-owned FG Wilson group which had been producing container trailers to export its power generation plants for some years.
Over the past decade it has put together a portfolio of multi-deck designs, many of which carry US and European patents.
Wilson now has Euro-approval for its brakes, lights and running gear which comprising RO.R BMX tri-and tandem axles, SAF stub axles and Wilson beams. With agents in Holland, Germany, France, Spain and Sweden its presence in mainland EC is a strong one.
The trailer demonstrated to CM is being used by Comstrans specialist distribution services on a Christian Salvesen contract, trunking chemicals, film and processing equipment for Agfa.
Built to a 14.46m overall length, its 9.65mlong/2.22m-wide second deck carries upto 8.0 tonnes with other special loads stored over the neck. Tare weight is 11.4 tonnes.
It elevates using a pair of matched hydraulic cylinders set transversely beneath the floor; one mounted within the angle of the swan neck and the other behind the bogie. Movement is via fork-lift chains and pulleys.
Safety features include hydraulic/mechanical czmlocks and optional shootbolts. The deck can be lowered manually in the event of hydraulic failure.
The 36-tonne GCW tri-axle trailer has GRP bodywork over a steel peripheral frame with twin full height doors. It runs on 265/70R 19.5s and achieves a 540mm load deck height, but other versions are available that give a 330mm height.
