Electronic navigator
• Columbus is a new handheld electronic routefinder which uses the AA's road network database to help drivers to plan their journeys efficiently. It's the size of a mobile phone and can tap into the information which is stored on Routeing Cards'. Just one is needed breach country, says its UK developer Pan Star. The UK service is now available and cards for other European countries will follow.

Case for retreading
• Tyre retreads can be contoured to the original new tyre profiles using a new system, according to Scorpion Retreads of Dorking, Surrey. The company says its belt technology is the first to rebuild the casing before retread and ensures high reliability by rebuilding tyres to their original rigidity. Contact (0306) 877134.
Alarm raiser
• A pager alarm which operates up to 2km away from the parked vehicle has been launched by Gemini Elertronica.
The pager alerts the driver when the door, bonnet, or boot is opened, or when movement is detected inside the vehicle. It can work either independently or in connection with an existing alarm system. The driver carries a MPT 1361 receiver with a battery life of up to 500 hours.
The Gemini Pager Alarm costs £179 and can be installed in an hour.
