• Dennis Eagle has become the first European truck maker to fit the latest Perkins Peregrine midrange truck diesel engine. The Warwick-based specialist vehicle maker is fitting the 186kW (250hp) Navistar-built 7.6-live charge-cooled 8-250Ti straight six in its Elite six-wheeler municipal chassis as a more powerful option to the existing 6.0-litre Perkins Phaser 210 Ti.
The Euro-1 certified Peregrine, revealed exclusively by Commercial Motor in our TipCon report (CA/6-12 May), offers 19% more power and 29°c torque than the Phaser, It is also 159kg heavier and 100rnm longer resulting in it being fitted further back in the Elite chassis.
According to Dennis Eagle its use has meant "no ergonomic compromises. The floor level is no higher, apart from the effect of the heavier chassis' increased tyre size. And the Elite cab floor remains flat and unobstructed".
Two Peregrine-powered Elite six-wheelers will be unveiled at the IWM show at Torbay in a fortnight's time. The first is a conventional 6x4 with 2.45m wide cab for 26-tonne operations; the second is a new 2.2in narrow cab link-steered 6x2. Up till now the narrow Elite cab option has only been available on 4x2 chassis.
Desii.,med for increased manoeuvrability in congested city streets, the latest link-steered 6x2 model is plated initially at 24.7 tonnes, but with heavier axles and tyres can go up to the full 26-tonne three-axle rigid weight limit. With the short "driver plus three'' Elite cab specified the swept turning circle of the new 6x2 is quoted at 17 metres.
Both the show six-wheelers have an Allison World Series MD-3560 electronically controlled automatic gearbox with pushbut ton selection. 26-tonne 6x4 has a Norde rubber suspended back bogie while the new linksteered 6x2 Elite has air on both the (;KN second steer axle and 12-tonne Eaton drive axle.
The Peregrine Elite has already found favour with municipal buyers. The 6x4 show chassis will enter service with Biffa Waste Services while the twin-steer is the first of an order from Cory Environmental.
Since its arrival at last year's IWM show over 300 Elite models have been sold with more than 200 having been built at Dennis Eagle's Warwick production line.
