E North Western deputy LA Mr. A.

H. Jolliffe, was told at Manchester last week of the difficulties which had beset the business of T. H. Gillingham Ltd., Salford. Gillingham were seeking a new A licence for six vehicles to carry general goods in Lanes, Yorks, Cheshire, Midlands, N.E. coast, Glasgow, Cardiff, London area and North Wales.

For the company, Mr. E. A. Whitehead explained the business started with horses and carts, was in existence when road licensing was introduced, and still continues to function. To that degree, the renewal of an expired licence was applied for. A variety of circumstances had led to considerable delay in its determination and he referred to the correspondence with the LA's office.

Mr. Whitehead said that without the knowledge of the Lancashire directors of the company, winding-up proceedings in London had resulted in an order being made; but later those directors were successful in getting it rescinded. This involved finding £10,000. The company's premises had been the subject of a clearance order by the Salford Corporation, without the offer of alternative accommodation. Now the office had been moved and an offer of alternative premises received.

A director, Mr. W. B. Gregson, told Mr. Jolliffe that he had been associated with the business since 1940. He submitted certified earnings, together with a list of customers. There were no objections and the application was granted.
