Details of the British-built Chassis for Light Loads which is Exhibited at Wembley.

VISITORS to the motor section at the British Empire Exhibition will observe with interest that the Beardmore taxicab has now been replaced by the new 25-30-cwt. chassis of the:Same make; which' is shown in polished form. This vehicle is a very nice clean-looking job. It has an engine with the four cylinders cast en bloc, each cylinder having a bore of 80 mm. and a stroke of 120 mm., giving the unit an R....4.0. rating of 15.6'h.p. The lubricating circulated oil is circulad under all .

pressure to bearings by a gear-driven pump situated in the sump, and the valves are on the near side, the gear being enclosed by easily detachable covers.

Ignition is attended to by a magneto of Robert Bosch make, and carburation by a Zenith instrument. The timing gears are operated by a silent chain, adjustment for which is provided by swinging over the bracket carrying the magneto, fine adjustment being provided by a setscrew.

Circulation of the cooling water is assisted by an impeller driven from an extension of the..fan 'spindle, 'and a 17type belt is employedfor the fan itself. Both the engine-‘and gearbox are carried on a four-point-suspended sub-frame built of angle steel.. Between them is a Ferodo-faced cone clutch of the external type, .provided with a simple form of clutch brake consisting of a disc and Ferodo pad. The clutch shaft is -provided with a double thickness Fardy disc joint.

Four speeds are afforded by the gearbox, the ratios being; Direct drive, lorry 7,2 to 1, coach 6,4 to 1; third speed, lorry 11.52 to 1, coach 10.24 to 13 second speed, lorry 16.45 to 1, coach 14.63 to 1 ; first speed, lorry 28.8 to 1, coach 25.6 to 1; seversa, 43.2 to 1, coach 38.4 to 1. Both the hand brake lever and the change speed lever are carried on the frame, whilst the foot brake and clutchoperating mechanism are mounted on a cross-ahaIt on the sub-frame.

Behind the gearbox is a two-piece propeller shaft with a centre bearing. In this shaft. there are three Hardy joints, each of three thicknesses, and there is a sliding splined joint at the front end of the rear portion.

A vertically split central casing is em played for the rear axle and the axle tubes are -bolted to this casing.

The final drive is by overhead worm gearing. Bothbrakes are of the internal-expanding type and act on the rear wheel drums. Adjustable screw stops are provided for the brake levers.

The wheels are of the disc type for 595 mm. by 135 mm. pneumatic tyres, which, in the example shown, are Dunlop cord.

The frame is stoutly built of pressed steel channels, and there are five cross members.

The springing is quite normal, being by semi-elliptics both at the front and rear.

A special feature which we noted throughout the chassis was the very careful attention paid to lubrication; every lubricator being of the gun type. The 'Wheelbase is 11 ft. 5 ins, and the track 4 ft. 7 ins..

The price of the exhibit is £395.,
