The Activities of owners in Sheffield and Rotherham with Reference to the Support which they Receive from a Prominent Organization.

CONSIDERABLE activity is taking 41aee amongst the ranks of the motor coach pieprietors in the Sheffield and Rotherham districts, and elaborate plans have been madeto meet the requirements of intending-!passengers during the next few months: Ilia some instances 'moat comprehensive programmes have been embarkedeupon, and some very attractive lours have been arranged, amongst these being ,five, seven and nine-day tours in North Wales; ten and 15-day tours in the South and South-West of England; five, seven and nine-clay tours in the Lake District; and, in addition, attractive tours to the British Empire EXhibition at Wembley. In the charges -which are swede ade for these longdistance runs, 14,el accommodation and meals are included.'

The hon. secretary of the North-Eastern Division (Sheffiedd and Rotherham area) of the Commercial Motor Users Association alsoeadvises us that the services run last year to Blackpool,. Scarborough, Bridlington and Cleetherpes are again figuring on the list of 1924 runs from -Sheffield. United Services is the name-under which some of the services are run by Messrs. E. WarrinereSydney Sims, 0. Ceudel, B. Grocoek and Thomas S. Roothroyd, and the admirable services maintained by this group of proprietors are to be adhered to throughout the season.

Mr. T. S. Boothroyd, who runs a fleet of Denniss'and Fiat coaches, has this year arranged for his vehicles to tour many parts of the country not previously visited from Sheffield, and has completed .arrangetnents for coach trips as farNorth as the Highlands of Sealland, 1338 the. Lake District, North Wales and the West of England. He has also planned a series of special half-day and day trips to meet the requirements -.of residents in, and visitors to, the district.

Motor coach proprietors in this area are much indebted to the C.M.U.A. for the admirable assistance which it has rendered in the interests of owners during the close season, and it is worthy. of FOO4'd that the activities of the Association have practically resulted in the general stabilization of fares, which remain almest unaltered from those which were in force last year. Mr. Wakelaan, the bon. secretary of the local organization, has obtained a number of elaborate and picturesque posters from the. authorities at many other seaside resorts, and these have been -distributed to members of the Association for exhibiting on their premises in order to draW attention to the pleasures of road touring.'

• It is stated that the outlook in the coaching industry in Sheffield and Rotherham districts for the present .season is most promising.

A Coach Park Wanted.

In view of the ever-growing popularity of the district as a venue for motor coach tours from Carlisle and other Border towns, Wetheral Parish•Council is considering the advisability of reciuesting -the Cumberland Coudy Council or the local district council to provide a recognized ()each park in order to prevent long rows of vehicles from standing in the village streets.; Petrol-Electric and Trolley-bus Combined.

A N INTERESTING sand new type of .1-linoterbus, of which we reproduce an illustration, has been designed by Mr. J. B. Parker, of the Toeside Railless Traction Board, of Middlesbrough Road, South Bank. It is desigued to run either as a trolley-bus, taking current from overhead equipment, or, where that is not available, to use a petrol-electric set, embodying an engine, generator and motor, arranged after a fashion already familiar to us in such chassis as the Tilling-Stevens and tbe Frost-Smith. The current from the overhead equipment, when it is in use, is utilized to drive the electric motor which forms part . of the petrol-electric set.

The control of the vehicle is by means of a pair of hand levers operating a reversing and breaking switch of the usual type, and a step-by-step controller. There is also provided a throttle lever for the engine, as well as a change-over switch, to transfer the motor connections from the overhead equipment to the self-contained generator, and vice -versa; there is also a starting switch, by means of which the petrol engine is put in motion by current from the overhead equipment, when the bus is about to enter on a stage of its journey where such equipment is no longer available.
