Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Nine out of 10 artic...s regularly break the 50mph dual-carriageway speed limit, new Government figures reveal.

Last year the proportion speeding on motorways halved to 11"—but 72% are breaking the 40mph limit on single carriageways. However, less than 1% manage to break the national 70mph motorway limit; this compares favourably with the 1991 figure of 43%.

The Road Haulage Assoc

iation blames motorway speed restrictions for encouraging drivers to speed on secondary roads.

"Speed limiters stop speeding on a motorway," says a spokesman, "but unfair limits force drivers to speed up on secondary roads.

"The rigorous training that truck drivers undergo should mean that they enjoy the same speed limits as ordinary motorway users," he adds.
