Daf Trucks looks set to pay off for Paccar's US divisions, Peterbilt and Kenworth.

At the Las Vegas International Trucking Show, Peterbilt revealed that a 12.6-litre, 460hp Daf engine is to be evaluated in a Peterbilt chassis.

This engine powers the 95XF, which was displayed on both the Peterbilt and Kenworth stands at Las Vegas.

Daf products will be the basis of a new generation of American cabovers being prepared to complement the age ing Peterbilt 362 and Kenworth K100— ultimately, a 95-based derivative could replace both of these American trucks.

The buyout could signal the end of the line for the John Deere 12-litre automotive engine which has been under evaluation by Paccar. Kenworth and Peterbilt have both been keen to offer alternatives to the Cummins Mll and Caterpillar C10/C12 to counter Freightliner's preferential deal with Detroit Diesel and the Series 55.

The Mercedes 0M465-based Series 55, available exclusively to Freightliner, gives the company a competitive advantage in the expanding US market for 12-litre bonneted trucks. The light and powerful Daf engines will give Peterbilt and Kenworth an in-house response to this—and to Volvo's YE D12A straight-six engine which powers its new bonneted VN.
