Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Eaton says it has overcome the problems experienced with early production versions of its 16-speed, S-Series synchromesh gearbox. It's also added a model to the S-Series line-up for engines in the sector above 400hp/1,900Nm.

Company engineers admit that some units from the initial S-Series production run have suffered from splitter pack separation resulting in a loss of splitter synchronisation. This has now been rectified.

The latest RTS (0)14316 version will, says Eaton, suit engines such as MAN's 400hp 12-litre in-line six, Iveco's 420hp 13.8-litre diesel, and the 400hp Cummins M11.

George Cooper, director of sales, Europe, says the gearbox manufacturer is also "closely watching the requirement for trucks with engines with up to 600hp/3,000Nm of torque, although the European market for such vehicles is less than 5,000 units a year."

He adds that if Eaton did build a 3,000Nm-capacity S. Seriesit would remain "within the same envelope of the SSeries design and dimensions."
