• A lorry driver who attempted to "do a runner" after he was caught smuggling almost £800,000-worth of drugs through Dover Eastern Docks has been jailed for seven-and-ahalf years.
Customs officers and Harbour Board officials apprehended Kieran Boylan of Selsdon Road, Croydon, Surrey: last week he appeared at Canterbury Crown Court to deny three charges of drug smuggling. Lucy Moorman, prosecuting, said when Boylan's lorry was searched, 753 blocks of cannabis resin were found and "Boylan tried to do what could colloquially be described as a runner".
Boylan told the court he was asked on the Belgian border by other drivers to take some tobacco back to England.
