Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• For long-distance bulk movements to distribution depots Bass Charrington is thinking in terms of either 38or 42 /44-ton five-axle artics. The 38-tonner will have a tandem-steer single-drive tractor and the 42 /44-tonner a double-drive three-axle unit. An example of both types is to be tried before a full-scale commitment is to be made. The 42-tonner has, in fact, already been delivered. It is one of the first examples of the Scammell Crusader double-drive tractive unit.

It is powered by an AEC V8 engine of 272 hp and has a 10-speed range-change Leyland Group gearbox.

The rear bogie is plated for 18 tons gross and the front axle for 6 tons. The plated gross train weight is 42 tons. A Hands dual-purpose trailer with a deck height of 5ft 6-f-in. is used. It has 10-ton axles on Neway trailing-arm air suspension and equipped with 18-22.5, 1.8-ply Super Single tyres. A Schnieder automatic pressuremaintaining system is used. Up to 15 tons can be imposed through the kingpin.

The chassis frame has an 1Iin. deep neck and an 184-in. deep main frame. The flanges . are 7in. wide. At the neck they are fin. thick, with double webbing. Behind the landing legs a single web is used but the top flange is tin. thick and the bottom flange is composed of two -kin. plates. Hydraulically operated Power Gear landing legs are fitted.

The 38-ton single-drive tractive unit which will be tried will be an Atkinson rear steer model powered by the new in-line eight-cylinder Gardner engine now nearing the end of its secret development. Comparisons with the Scammell will cover assessment of steering and traction as well as operating costs and general economics.

Lately delivered to Bass Charrington is this 42-ton Scammell Crusader double-drive tractive unit, shown coupled to a Hands dual-purpose trailer.
