• Within hours of his appointment as Minister of Transport, Mr John Peyton was invited to see for himself the problem of road congestion facing industry by travelling on a lorry carrying export goods to one of the major ports.
The invitation came from Lord Chesham. Chairman of the British Road Federation, who said: -Let the Minister see the harsh reality of traffic congestion in Britain before he gets bogged down in the detail of office. Let him contrast wasteful time-consuming delays in moving goods in Britain with the movement of freight to and from the ports of our main European competitors."
Lord Chesham, who was addressing the Federation's annual meeting in London. had called for the new Government to set a new target of 3000 miles of motorway by 1980. He said: "I do not believe that any single action by the new Government would do more to modernize Britain, give a greater incentive to industrial growth or do more to improve the whole quality of life than accelerating the building of motorways and the development of better roads in towns."
