pONCRETE mixer/agitators for vehicle mounting are to be made by Thompson Bros. of Bilston, Staffs, a concern which until now has specialized in the fabrication of metal products for many industries, including tanks for road vehicles for the transportation of liquids, powders and liquefied gases. Three models will be available, these having capacities of 4, 7 and 9 cu. yd. and they will be marketed with the name Thompson-Stetter, the design being that of Georg Stetter Baumaschinenfabrik K.G. of West Germany.
Drive to the drum can be either hydraulic or mechanical; in the first case through a hydraulic pump driven from the front of the vehicle engine's crankshaft, and in the latter, from an independent engine. In the case of the hydraulic operation, control is by a series of push btittons actuating solenoid valves and four-way selector valves. There are two hydraulic pumps, one at each end of the gearbox driven by the crankshaft and one can be isolated when the drum is working lightly. The drum is constructed from mild-steel plate with Corten steel internal flights and has two manholes for inspection purposes. The maximum rotational speed is 16 r.p.m.
The water system for the mixer can be supplied to a customer's particular requirements, all designs incorporating a belt-driven centrifugal pump. Lined mild-steel tanks in capacities varying from 45 to 175 gal, are available; filling can be from the top or bottom and provision can be made for additive injection. To facilitate high-pressure cleaning of the drum the mixers are supplied with a 25-ft. long wash-down hose, complete with a spray nozzle.
Positioning of the discharge chute, which has a 180° horizontal and 30° vertical movement, is governed by a handoperated screw mechanism which ensures accurate positioning on site. The complete discharge assembly can be swung out of the way to allow discharge into dumpers or skips.
All the controls for operation of the mixer are grouped at the rear of the unit and, in addition, a duplicate set can be installed in the cab of the vehicle to control the rotation of the drum during transport.
Total weight of a 7-cu.-yd. mixer unit complete with drive, mountings and wines is said to be about 3 tons 5 cwt. and special manufacturing facilities are being provided for line production of the mixers to enable an " off-the-shelf " service to be offered.
