in May, 1963, in Brighton, the Fork Truck Driver of the Year Competition was staged this year at Bingley Hall. Birmingham. last week and drew a large entry of 168. In the finals, championship winner Mr. G. Clamp (Caterpillar Tractors Ltd.) completed the three highly complicated manstuvring tests driving his Class B Yale truck, and a second round of the test course at the wheel of a Lansing Bagnall, with a total loss of 289 penalty points.
Runner-up T. Spicer (Kodak Ltd.) drove a Lansing Bagnall in both rounds of the final and lost 632 points, whilst R. Bound (G.P.O. Supplies Dept.) completed his first round in a Lansing Bagnail, transferred to a Coventry Climax for the run-off and lost 867 points. All the class winners qualified for the final, and in every case the run-off vehicle was selected by the organizers immediately before the round, the competitor being given only a few minutes instruction before starting the first test. The tests included Stacking and manneuvring in confined spaces, wcith judging and a bull's eye test in 'which the driver had to approach two target-practice rings at head height in a continuous movement and place the forks of his truck as near as possible to the centre without touching the targets.
Merger: Border Plant Hire Ltd. and Eden Plant Co, Ltd., Cumberland's two largest plant hire firms, merged this week to trade under the name of Seymour. The combined organization will operate over 600 items of plant and 80 vehicles, and will include Seymour Brothers (Stanley) Ltd., which was acquired recently.
