CLEAR and conspicuous marking of vehicles carrying dangerous loads, with a nationally recognized code, was called for at the annual conference of the British Fire Services Association last week. Bristol's tire brigade chief, Mi. K. L. Holland,' asked for a marking system which made clear the type of load. its main potential danger and the telephone number at which experts could be reached in an emergency. This plea was supported by a technician from ICI general chemicals division.

The distribution manager . of Laporte Chemicals Ltd., Mr. A. H. Smith, suggested special overnight parking areas, with inspection facilities, for vehicles with dangerous loads—perhaps adjacent to fire stations. He stressed that the chemical industry was working ,with the Ministry of Transport and international bodies on the drafting of regulations Covering the packing, handling and transport of dangerous loads.
