IN recent months the importers of the I Austrian Steyr-Puch Hollinger 4 x 4— Ryders Autoserv ice (G.B.) Ltd., Knowsley Road, Bootle, Liverpool, 20—have been able to offer a long-wheelbase version of the basic Hollinger with a load rating of IO cwt., This model is mechanically similar to the basic Hollinger, a road-test report of which was published in our issue of June 23, 1961, but the compression ratio of the 643 c.c. twin-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled, rear-mounted petrol engine has been increased from 6-5 to 72 to 1, giving a power increase of 6 b.h.p. to 28 b.h.p. The carburetter has been modified, and a cyclone-type pre-filter is now used on the main filter.
To cope with the extra load, heavier rear springs are employed, whilst braking power has been improved 'by using larger front-brake cylinders. A better driving position has resulted from reducing the length of the steering column, whilst the extra lit, of wheelbase (5 ft. 11 in. is the diinension for the long-wheelbase model) gives some 13 in. extra body space and room for four folding seats.
A demonstration Haffinger was recently borrowed for brief evaluation tests. The kerb weight of the vehicle was 15.5 cwt., and it was carrying sandbags totalling 11-5 cwt., giving a gross weight with crew of two of 1-5 tons. At this figure an overall consumption rate of 23 m.p.g. was obtained, whilst only slight clutch slip prevented a grassed slope of approximately 1 in 1-5 being ascended. The Haflinger's top speed on level roads was approximately 45 M.p.h., and whilst the extra weight undoubtedly cut down the acceleration performance compared with the basic lighter type, quite high average speeds could be achieved, and the vehicle appeared to have lost nothing of its unique cross-country abilities, these being derived from all-independent suspension which permits a vertical wheel travel of 8 in., and three lockable differentials.
The demonstration vehicle had the optional plastics cab, which provides fully enclosed accommodation for driver and passenger. The basic Hollinger has a list price in Britain of £620, and the long-wheelbase version costs £39 10s. more. The plastics cab is listed at £100, the extra-low {crawler) gear costs £45, the canvas tilt costs £34 10s. and the cab
heater £29. J.F.M.
