Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Bus, Business / Finance

Sheffield Surplus: The net surplus of Sheffield Corporation transport department in 1963-64 was £6,144 (£12,012 in the previous year). The gross surplus was down from £576,808 to £446,072 despite an increase in income of £62,000. The higher working expenses largely reflected wage increases. Some 24-rn. fewer passengers were carried than in 1962-63, and in his annual report the committee chairman makes a plea for staggered working hours to relieve the traffic congestion which the department's buses face. He records that economy measures included the operation of 104,000 fewer miles and a reduction of 64 in maintenance personnel, through depot re-organization.

Lighted Panels : For the first time, illuminated advertising panels are to be fitted on Nottingham Corporation buses. They are to be installed on 22 new double-deckers.

Bolton Surplus: Bolton Corporation's transport department showed a final surplus of £34,337 in 1963-64, the initial trading surplus before taxation, depreciation, etc., being £150,881. The undertaking ran a total of 7,826,050 miles during the year and carried 79,980,525 passengers—a drop of some 2m.

on the previous year. Revenue totalled 44-01d. per bus mile (41.92 in 1962-63) and working expenses were 39.38d per bus mile (37-72d.).

West liarilepool Loss Despite fares increases which became operative last September, West Hartlepool Corporation transport department lost £7,600 in the year ending March 31 last, compared with a profit of £3000 the previous year. Main reason was the spending of £23,700 on new buses compared with £10,700 in 1962-63. In a reference to the damage to bus shelters caused by vandals, the transport manager, Mr. T. .1. Sheppard, suggested to the transport committee that it might be more advantageous to the travelling public if half the money normally spent on shelters was used instead to fit more buses with heaters.

Rear-engined? Grimsby-Cleethorpes joint transport committee is considering a request from the general manager, Mr. .T. Rostron, that new vehicles to be ordered should have rear engines. Of the fleet of 106 buses, 27 are more than 15 years old, and it is suggested that three double-deckers and three single-deckers should be purchased next year as replacements.

Rawtenstall Results: In the year ended March 31 last, Rawtenstall Corporation transport department had a net income available for appropriation of £7,480 (compared with £3,973 in the previous year). The number of passengers carried (10,856,325) and the route-miles covered (1,276,972) were both slightly less than last year.

Sunderland Results: The annual report of Sunderland Corporation transport undertaking shows a deficit of £.25,453 in the year ended March 31 last, compared with a deficit of £30,329 the previous year. Mr. N. Morton, the transport manager, states that during the past 10 years the undertaking's operating costs have risen by 35 per cent and the average weekly gross earnings of the employees have increased from 19 7s. 2d. to £14 16s. 2d. During the past year, the number of passengers carried fell by 431,623 to 74.149,299, while receipts increased by £59,917 to f941,015.

Iron Curtain Tours? Mr. Ronald Clark, of Doncaster, who runs Wanderlust Tours in the town and was successful after three years in getting permission to operate cut-rate Mini-bus holiday tours to France and Spain, is now hoping to get permission to run similar tours to countries behind the Iron Curtain and in the Near East.
