Another Vehicle Added to the Fleet of a Cheltenham Concern which Operates a Popular Long-distance Service.

FOR some time past Black and White Motorways, Ltd., has been operating a daily passenger-vehicle service between Cheltenham and London, and the fleet of vehicles which it uses for this purpose has recently been increased following the purchase of a Gifford saloon coach, of which exterior and Interior views are shown in accompanying illustrations The chassis of this vehicle is the Gifford forward-control model having a wheelbase of 16 ft. 6 ins.; this particular chassis was fully described and illustrated in our issue dated May 8th.

The coachwork of the vehicle it the product of Wycombe Bodies, Ltd. The body is built to seat 26 people, most of the seats being of the transverse pattern and being disposed on each side of the central gangway. They are upholstered in leather and have detachable moquette back-rests, whilst loose cushions are also provided for the comfort of each passenger, independent of the usual seat, The cushions and back-rests can easily be removed for cleaning, an important feature from the hygienic point of view. As is clearly indicated by the illustration of the interior of the body, the seats give every suggestion of offering much comfort, which is so desirable in vehicles operating over long routes.

Ample provision is made for carrying heavy luggage in an enclosed section on the roof, but light parcels can be accommodated on a series of racks which runs along both sides of the interior just below the roof. A further provision is the fitting of a light luggage rack in the rear near-side earner.

Special attention has been given to the subjects of lighting and ventilation. So far as the former is concerned, 10 lamps are used and the picture of the interior shows that these fittings are almost flush with the roof line. The windows at the sides are all made to drop and a wide range of regulation is provided for each of them. Communication is effected with the driver by four push bells which are also set in the roof.

It might be mentioned that this is the third high-class saloon vehicle which the Gifford Motor Co., Ltd., the works of which are at High Wycombe, Bucks, has supplied to Black and White Motorways, Ltd.
