A FOREWORD.

If the fine weather of the pre-Show week should last over the period of the Show itself, such ideal conditions, combined, with the facilities for enjoyment which are offered by the beautiful location of the " Royal " this year, should render the possibility of anything but a great success for the R.A.S.E. Annual Exhibition a very remote one.

Writing after a careful inspection of the whole of the commercial-motor exhibits which are to be seen in the showyards on Durdhant Downs, it. is now possible to record the conviction that a visit to the machineryin-motion and implement section is well worth the trouble involved. Perhaps it may be conceded at once that the variety is not so marked as in previous years. Nevertheless, there is much that is new and progressive in the machines. That we are on the eve of great things in respect to the employment of agrimotors is evident from a consideration of the progress which is being made by the several firms in this country who have specialized in this kind of plant. It is true that several of the makers, who have on previous occasions shown examples of their types of internal-combustion-engined agrirnotors, this year show nothing of the kind. There is, however, dis

tinct evidence of renewed interest in the production of satisfactory power-driven plant suitable for this. country. Notable in this respect is the first public appearance of the Wyles motor-plough, to be found on John Fowler's stand.

Another .development which is noteworthy at the present " Royal " is the renewed interest that is being shown by manufacturers of steam-haulage plant in the matter of adopting superheaters and feed-water heaters in the design of their machines. Garrett's in particular have laboured in this direction for many years, and their steam wagons and tractors have created records of their own. Now, we find several other makers, who it is true have been known to be experimenting for some time past, actually coming into the daylight with examples of superheater tractors, It appears likely that this development will go much further in the near future.

With regard to accessories, components and supplies, we have, to some extent, made our review more comprehensive this year than on previous occasions, and have done our best in the space at our disposal to draw attention to many of the leading examples, of internal-combustion stationary plant.
