• UK hauliers carried 25% more goods to the Continent during 1990 than in 1989 and the number of journeys made rose by 14%, according to figures just published by the Department of Transport.
The International road haul
age by United Kingdom registered vehicles — report on 1990 shows that there was a 17% increase in tonnage carried into the UK.
France and Germany retain the highest proportions of the total loadings and unloadings in terms of the tonnage that was carried by UK hauliers.
Another Department of Transport report — The Transport of Goods by Road in Great Britain 1990 — shows that goods moved by large goods vehicles fell by 1% to 131 billion tonnes during 1990.
The decline is attributed to a fall in the transport of building and bulk materials: tonne kilometres of consumable commodities increased.
