• Mercedes is due to launch the first of its new generation LEV (Low Emissions Vehicle) range in the UK by early April. First to arrive will be the 1834 and 2534 premium tractive units, powered by the new 9,6litre 0M441LA vee-six engine. This is the most powerful version of the vee-six family; it produces 250kW (335hp) at 1,900rpm with 1,400Nm (1,0331bft) of torque between 1,000 and 1,600rpm.
The 1834 and 2534 will replace the 11-litre vee-sixpowered 1733 and 2433, respectively: the 18 and 25 prefixes denote the increased design weights on the two and threeaxle chassis.
The two new tractive units will also be joined by the 1820 two axle rigid, which supersedes the 1720. It is powered by the six-litre 0M366LA in-line six cylinder charge-cooled diesel, which is unchanged. The 1820 also benefits from the higher design weight.
Other revisions to the heavy truck range will be phased in before the summer. Modifications to the 12 vans and LN2 truck range will run through autumn and winter. The 1993 emissions regulations will apply to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes so these lighter vehicles will also be affected. Changes to the existing engines will cause a power loss of around 5%, but to offset this more powerful models were added to both ranges this year, designated the 711D 12, 817 and 1117 LN2.
