• The West Midland LA Mr. J. Else, wished good luck to an applicant in Hanley on December 20 since, after 15 years as a driver he was becoming a haulier, but he cautioned him about keeping his vehicle well maintained.
Mr. G. K. Hodgkinson of Leek was applying for a new B licence to carry cardboard cartons and waste within a 50-mile radius but he said that in order to safeguard the three objectors' traffic the licence could be consigned to his two customers.
He produced a letter from Bowater Packaging Ltd., Ellesmere Port, from whom he wished to collect new cartons and deliver them for the packing of china within the Potteries.
His other customer will be Casepak (Midlands) Ltd. of Leicester. A partner from this company, Mr. G. A. E. Smith, explained that he required Mr. Hodgkinson to do work formerly undertaken by his own vehicles which were now fully occupied in the Leicester area. The objectors were concerned about waste traffic but although the two companies from whom the cardboard cartons would be collected considered them waste, his company converted them for resale to the engineering and plastics trades, said Mr. Smith. Contracts were held with Adams Butter Ltd. and William Tatton and Co. Ltd. to clear used cartons, and Mr. Hodgkinson's vehicle would be required three days a week.
"I will allow you to carry new and used cardboard cartons and containers for Bowater Packaging Ltd. within 50 miles and used cardboard cartons and packages for Casepak (Midlands) Ltd., picking up within 10 miles of base for carriage to Leicester, Mr. Else told the applicant. -Good luck to you in this venture.
