Speedometers for All Vehicles?

A Bill which if passed will be cited as the Road Traffic (Safeguarding of the Public) Act, 1935, has been brought forward to enforce the provision of an efficient speedometer on every motor vehicle.

It also provides that the driving of a motor vehicle cm a road at a speed or in such a manner as not to permit it to be brought to a standstill within the distance for which the driver can see the road to be clear, shall be deemed to be reckless driving within Section 11 of the principal Act; also, it is to make it unlawful for a motor vehicle to be driven on any stretch of road of a width not at least double the overall width of the vehicle, but where grave inconvenience might be caused the Minister is to be permitted, by order, to exempt any specified stretch for a period not exceeding two years.

Liquidator Appointed for Gilfords.

At meetings of the creditors and shareholders of the Gilford Motor Co., Ltd., held on Tuesday, Sir W. H. Peat was appointed liquidator. Mr. Jeffrey Baker, who presided, presented a statement which disclosed liabilities of £21,802, whilst assets, after allowing for first debentures of £14,727, second debentures of £7,110, and preferential claims of £374, were valued at £5.720, so that the deficiency is £16,082. As the issued share capital is £100,000, the total deficiency is £116,082.

The-Gilford concern was registered in November, 1926, and was converted B14 into a public company in April, 1929. Mr. Baker mentioned that the present position had been brought about by the failure of the production of a frontwheel-drive model in 1932, bad debts, and to the loss of many customers consequent on the creation of a monopoly by the formation of the Londor Passenger Transport Board.

Mr. Ernest Lake is the chairman of the reorganized and amalgamated businesses. We understand that Mr. William Frost will, for the time being, assist the newly constituted board.
