Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• British hauliers suffered more disruption this week as French drivers blocked major freight routes in their second protest in less than a month against the 35-hour week.

As CM went to press, fears that the protests would continue beyond the planned 48 hours were growing as drivers made their way to the ports of Le Havre, Calais and the Channel Tunnel terminal.

Normandy was the worst affected area, with the A22 badly hit in both directions at the Franco-Belgian border. The 416 at Calais was also said to be at a standstill.

Negotiations between drivers and employers were rumoured to be taking place on Tuesday afternoon with the French transport minister "mediating''. The drivers are fighting for a Uturn by the French government over the 35-hour working week which came into force on Tuesday. They are demanding end-of-year bonuses and a 50% pay rise for night work.

• German ferry 'coney Transcamion Schiffahrtsagentur is offering additional ferry services to Bilbao and Santander during the protests. Contact: +4989 8960730.
