• The Labour Government introduced the Working Time Directive in October 1998. Most workers are covered by this law and it is likely that road transport workers will eventually be included. While the directive is generally mistrusted by the industry, its flexibility means that many hauliers' fears might turn out to be groundless, unless they are routinely breaking the existing hours laws.
