• Caterpillar's C12 has been on sale in the US since 1996, with 50,000 now in service worldwide. It might be better known in Europe as the power behind Chris Hodges racing truck, where it produced a reliable 1,450hp. Foden drivers will have to make do with engines nominally rated at 400 and 430hp.
The 12-litre engines have four valves per cylinder and are fuelled by Caterpillar's MEUI (mechanically activated, electronically controlled unit injection) system. The Euro-2 engines are eligible for Reduced Pollution Certificates without after-treatment and are optimised for UKspec ULSD fuel. As usual with Caterpillar, a Jacobs engine brake is a standard fitment of the 940kg engine. Both versions will be available in the full range of Alpha tractors, with the 400 also available in the 8x4 rigid.
